How much do I have to vape to get the same nicotine I do from smoking?

When thinking of transitioning from analog cigarettes to e-cigs or vaporizer technology, one major question many ask is, “How much do I have to vape in order to get the same amount of nicotine that I do from smoking cigarettes?”

The answer to that question depends on three main factors – how many cigarettes you smoke every day (on average), the milligram amount of nicotine in the vape liquid you buy, and the millilitre capacity of the “tank” in your vaporizer.

A helpful formula to calculate the mg amount you want to buy for your e-juice is the following:

Nicotine Content (in milligrams) x Tank Capacity (in milliliters) = Number of Cigarettes

Many vaporizer tanks hold a maximum of 4 millimeters of e-juice. If we treat that as fixed in our formula, we get the following:

Nicotine Content (mg) x 4 (mL) = Number of Cigarettes

Smoking one cigarette equals approximately 1 mg of nicotine absorption in your body. So, take note of how many cigarettes you smoke. If you’re smoking 10 a day (half a pack), that equals approximately 10 mg of nicotine body absorption.

10 cigarettes = 10 mg of nicotine

Moving that to our formula, we get:

Nicotine Content (mg) x 4 (mL) = 10 (cigarettes)

Now, all we have to do next is solve for nicotine content to get which nicotine level e-juice we want to buy if we want to get the same amount of nicotine as the body absorbs smoking 10 cigs:

Nicotine Content (mg) = 10 / 4 = 2.5mg

E-juice nicotine levels usually come in preset amounts – 0mg, 3mg, 6mg, 12mg and 18mg.

Therefore, if you’re smoking half a pack a day, you’ll want to choose 3mg nicotine levels in your e-juice and fill up your 4mL tank. You’ll need to vape that entire tank in one day to absorb as much nicotine as 10 cigarettes.

Let’s walk through one more example just so we’re sure. Let’s say you have a 6mL tank capacity and smoke 20 cigarettes (a full pack) a day. Again, we want to figure out how much nicotine mg content vape liquid we want to buy. Inputting that into our formula, we get:

Nicotine Content x 6 = 20

Nicotine Content = 20 / 6 = 3.33mg

In this case, we would want to choose the 3 mg nicotine and fill the 6mL tank to capacity, or choose 6mg nicotine and fill the 6mL tank to half capacity to get the same amount of nicotine as a pack of cigs.

Now that you know which mg of nicotine strength you want to buy in your e-juice, the next step is to buy the e-liquid. You can save some money by buying e-juice at wholesale prices (from Dynamic Creations), or you can buy at your local vape shop.
